During a crisis, Van Gogh cut off his left ear (right in his later mirror self-portraits) with a razor blade. This self-mutilation is believed to be a symptom of his already failing mental health and a precursor to the suicide he committed seven months later.
And yet from this same mental health considered "failing" emerged paintings that were precursors of their time, in which the artist felt free to express his own emotions.
