A Thousand and One Fridas

Format: 80x80 cm

Mixed media: acrylic painting, digital, and collage.

Contemporary portrait of Frida Kahlo created using mixed media. Collages, Mexican motifs, and vibrant colors compose a rich, sprawling work exploring identity, memory, resilience, and creative strength.

In this richly textured work, the face of Frida Kahlo is built from a multitude of fragments, each representing a facet of her identity. Images, textile patterns, printed papers, striking colors, and touches of paint intertwine to compose a vibrant and deeply symbolic portrait.

The intense blue that runs through the canvas evokes the sky, water, and the world of the famous Casa Azul. Surrounding the face are references to Mexican culture, flowers, traditional fabrics, colorful skulls, and popular imagery. These elements tell the story of a multifaceted woman: artist, icon, activist, lover, wounded soul, and resilient spirit.

Through this mosaic-like composition, Frida seems to carry within her multiple stories, bodies, and eras. Her direct gaze remains the anchor of the work, while the fragments surrounding her evoke memory, reconstruction, and the capacity to transform pain into creative force.

A luminous and expressive work, standing at the crossroads of contemporary portraiture, collage, and pop art, which pays tribute to a universal figure of freedom and resistance.
