Girl with a Pearl Earring is one of the most famous Baroque works in the history of painting. It was created by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer around 1665.

Always with the goal of drawing inspiration from the great masters of painting to counter this anxiety-inducing period that we have all lived through and which unfortunately still continues today.

I chose to draw inspiration from it to tap into all the energy and light that this painting conveys.

The light captured by the various light-colored collages of her face and the bright, transparent reflections of her turban make her shimmer in the shadows, enhancing the freshness and purity of the young girl. This aspect is reinforced by a black trail all around her portrait that forms an aura.

The choice to represent a light-skinned young girl against a dark background accentuates the contrast, and thus the effect of presence, marking the importance of this moment where she stares at the painter (or the spectator) out of the corner of her eye.
She seems surprised, her mouth slightly open as if the painting were capturing a suspended moment.

The colors are meant to be vivid and intense, both in the turban she wears and in her dress, to reflect her youth and her thirst for life. Her aura appears all around her like a subtle imprint embedded in the black background.

To acquire even more intensity, these colors have been echoed by the dripping technique used on the black background.

All the mysteries surrounding such a famous masterpiece have allowed for certain interpretations.
Thus, Girl with a Pearl Earring inspired a novel of the same name in 1999 by the British writer Tracy Chevalier. She imagines a platonic relationship, but one made of fascination, between Vermeer and a young servant who serves as his model.
The novel was adapted for the big screen by Peter Webber in 2003, with Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth.
